The polynomial f(X) with coefficients from a commutative ring R is said to be primitive if its coefficients generate R as an ideal. R is said to be primitive if for every primitive polynomial f there exists \(\alpha\in R\) such that f(\(\alpha)\) is invertible in R. The author describes the subnormal subgroups of \(GL_ 2(R)\), R a local or primitive ring. Let 1/2\(\in R\). The subnormal subgroup H of subnormal depth d lies between congruence-subgroups, corresponding to the ideals J, \(J^{f(d)}\), where J is the smallest ideal, such that H is central modulo J and \(f(d)=(6^ d-1)/5\) if R is primitive and \(f(d)=(5^ d-1)/4\) if R is local. If \(d=1\) this is the result of \textit{B. R. McDonald} [Commun. Algebra 8, 869-888 (1980; Zbl 0436.20031)]. Analogous results are obtained in the author's previous work [Algebra Logika 22, No.6, 707-713 (1983; Zbl 0542.20028)] and in the work of \textit{J. S. Wilson} [Proc. Camb. Philos. Soc. 71, 163- 177 (1972; Zbl 0237.20044)].
