It has been shown by \textit{D. J. S. Robinson} [Q. J. Math., Oxf. II. Ser. 30, 351-364 (1979; Zbl 0418.20031)] that a Chernikov group which is the full automorphism group of some group is necessarily finite. Here, the following extension is proved by a somewhat more elementary and non- cohomological argument: Theorem: Suppose G is a group for which Aut G is locally finite and satisfies the minimum condition on p-subgroups for all primes p. Then a) Aut G is residually finite and every Sylow subgroup of Aut G is finite. b) The set of elements of finite order in G is a residually finite subgroup containing G', all of whose Sylow subgroups are finite.
