The system \[ \dot s=\nu_ 0-v\circ (s,p),\quad \dot p=v\circ (s,p)-\rho \circ p,\quad \nu_ 0\in {\mathbb{R}}^+, \] is considered, with appropriate assumptions on v and \(\rho\), which describes the pseudo-steady-state approximation of the kinetic differential equation of many biochemically interesting reactions. Sufficient conditions are given for the existence of a unique positive equilibrium and for the boundedness of the solutions of the system. Results on the instability of the solutions and the possibility of Hopf bifurcations are also included. The results are compared to those of \textit{H. G. Othmer} and \textit{J. A. Aldridge}, J. Math. Biology 5, 169-200 (1978; Zbl 0398.92008) and to those of \textit{D. Erle, K. Mayer} and \textit{T. Plesser}, Math. Biosciences 44, 191-208 (1979; Zbl 0399.92008). Two applications are investigated in detail. In these cases existence of oscillatory domains in the parameter space is proved.
