This is the continuation of the author's important work on the approximate functional equation for \(\zeta^ 2(s)\) [Parts I, II, ibid. 59, 392-396, 469-472 (1983; Zbl 0541.10032)]. The author considers the function \[ {\mathcal E}_ 2(s,\alpha t/2\pi)=\zeta^ 2(s)-\sum_{n\leq \alpha t/2\pi}'d(n)n^{-s}-\chi^ 2(s)\sum_{n\leq t/2\pi \alpha}'d(n)n^{s-1}, \] which may be thought of as the error term in the approximate functional equation for \(\zeta^ 2(s)\), where \(s=\sigma +it\), \(0\leq \sigma \leq 1\), \(t\geq 2\), \(0<\alpha <1\) is a parameter, and the dash indicates that in the sums the last terms are to be halved when \(\alpha\) t/2\(\pi\) or t/2\(\pi\alpha\) are integers. When \(\alpha\) is a rational number, \(\alpha =\ell /k\), \((\ell,k)=1\), \(k\ell \leq t(\log t)^{-20}\), the author sketches how a sharp asymptotic expansion, which contains the error term in a certain divisor problem, may be derived for the function \({\mathcal E}_ 2(s,\ell t/2\pi k)\).
