    The Hermite-Féjer process consists of the following: on [-1,1] consider the n points \(x_ k^{(n)}=\cos (2k-1)n/2n.\) Let \(H_ n\) be the polynomial of degree 2n-1 defined (uniquely) by \(H_ nf(x_ k^{(n)})=f(x_ k^{(n)}),\) \(H_ n'f(x_ k^{(n)})=0\), \(k=1,2,...,n\). Féjer's result is that for \(f\in C[-1,1]\), \(H_ nf\to f\) as \(n\to \infty\), uniformly on [-1,1]. The author considers the extended Hermite-Féjer process which consists of constructing \(F_ n(f,x)\), a polynomial of degree \(2n+3\), satisfying \[ F_ nf(x_ k^{(n)})=f(x_ k^{(n)}),\quad F_ n(f,\pm 1)=f(\pm 1),\quad F_ n'f(x_ k^{(n)})=F_ n'f(\pm 1)=0, \] on the extended set with \(x_ 0^{(n+2)}=1\), \(x_ k^{(n)}\) as above and \(x_{n+1}^{(n+2)}=-1\). He has earlier shown that this process converges on some functions and diverges on others, but in particular converges for \(f\in C^ 2[-1,1]\). In this article he shows that \(F_ n\to f\) in \(L^ p[-1,1]\) for \(0<p<\infty\) if and only if f has a right (or left) derivative at \(\mp 1\) and such that \(f'(1)=f'(-1)=0\).
