\textit{P. Jothilingam} and \textit{S. Mangayarcarassy} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 120, 1017--1019 (1994; Zbl 0801.13005)] proved that if \(M\) is a finite \(R\)-module such that pd\(_R(M/I M)\) is finite for all ideals \(I\) generated by \(R\)-regular sequences, then \(M\) is free or \(R\) is regular. The goal of the paper under review is to give analogues of this result for various homological dimensions and related ring-theoretic concepts. The main result reads as follows: Let \(R\) be a noetherian local ring of depth \(d\), \(C\) a semidualizing \(R\)-complex, \(M\) a finite \(R\)-module, and \(t\) an integer between 0 and \(d\). Then if the \(G_C\)-dimension of \(M/I M\) is finite for all ideals \(I\) generated by an \(R\)-regular sequence of length at most \(d-t\) then either the \(G_C\)-dimension of \(M\) is at most \(t\) or \(C\) is a dualizing complex. This result applied, for instance, to a semidualizing \(R\)-module \(C\) (resp., \(C=R\)) yields a criterion for the Cohen-Macaulay (resp., Gorenstein) property.
