The author studies three instances of the following general question. Let \(\Omega\) be a relatively compact open set in the complex plane and let \((X,J)\) be an almost-complex manifold. Given a continuous map \(f\) from the closure \(\overline{\Omega}\) to \(X\) that is \(J\)-holomorphic in the interior, can \(f\) be approximated by \(J\)-holomorphic maps on shrinking neighborhoods of \(\overline{\Omega}\)? First he proves that this is the case if \(K\), \(\Omega\) and \(f\) are sufficiently smooth. Then he considerably lowers the smoothness assumption in the case when \(J\) is integrable, recovering a special case of results of \textit{B. Drinovec-Drnovšek} and \textit{F. Forstnerič} [Duke Math. J. 139, No. 2, 203--253 (2007; Zbl 1133.32002)]. Finally he considers the problem of constructing coordinate neighborhoods of arcs in complex manifolds. He generalizes a classical result of \textit{H. L. Royden} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 43, 306--310 (1974; Zbl 0292.32019)] from the real analytic case to the smooth case, with perhaps a finite number of mild singularities.
