A natural and interesting problem about automorphisms of polynomial rings is to describe succinctly which endomorphisms are actually automorphisms. Probably, the most famous of these is the Jacobian Conjecture, which unfortunately is still just a conjecture. The paper under review deals with this problem via a new direction. If \(F\) is a polynomial endomorphism of \(\mathbb{C}[x_1,\ldots,x_n]\), it makes sense to say whether it satisfies a formal power series equation. The authors show that the automorphisms which satisfy such equations generate the set of all automorphisms.
