A Lie triple system \(T\) is said to be metric (or quadratic) it if is endowed with a nondegenerate symmetric bilinear form \(b\) such that \(b([xuv],y)=b(x,[yvu])\) for any \(u,v,x,y\in T\). These are called `metrised Lie triple systems' in this paper. Given a Lie triple system \(A\) and a \(3\)-cocycle of \(A\) with values in the dual space \(A^*\), a new triple system can be constructed on \(T=A\oplus A^*\) so that \(A^*\) becomes an abelian ideal and \(T/A^*\) is isomorphic to \(A\). Moreover, \(T\) is metric with \(b(A,A)=0=b(A^*,A^*)\) and \(b(a,f)=f(a)\) for any \(a\in A\) and \(f\in A^*\). The triple system \(T\) is said to be a \(T^*\)-extension of \(A\). This is a generalization of the \(T^*\)-extensions on Lie algebras considered by a number of authors [see \textit{M. Bordemann}, Acta Math. Univ. Comen., New Ser. 66, No. 2, 151--201 (1997; Zbl 1014.17003)]. The metric Lie triple systems obtained as \(T^*\)-extensions are studied in the paper under review. The main result asserts that any finite dimensional nilpotent metric Lie triple system over an algebraically closed field of characteristic \(\neq 2\) is isometrically isomorphic to either a \(T^*\)-extension if its dimension is even, or to a nondegenerate codimension one ideal of a \(T^*\)-extension otherwise.
