    The authors consider the space \(H^\infty (\Sigma_\varphi)\) of all the bounded analytic functions on \(\Sigma_\varphi := \{ \lambda \in \mathbb{C} \setminus \{ 0 \} : | \arg \lambda | < \varphi \}\) and the subspace \(H^\infty_0 (\Sigma_\varphi)\) of all \(f \in H^\infty (\Sigma_\varphi)\) which obey the estimate \(|f(z)| \leq C \frac{|z|^\delta}{(1+|z|)^{2\delta}}\) (\(\delta >0\)). Given a sectorial operator \(A\) on the Banach space \(X\) with angle of sectoriality \(\omega (A)\), the bounded operator \(f(A)\) is defined for every \(f \in H^\infty_0 (\Sigma_\varphi)\). The authors say that \(A\) has an absolute functional calculus if there are functions \(g,h \in H^\infty_0 (\Sigma_\varphi)\), where \(\varphi > \omega (A)\), such that, if \(\|h(tA) g(tA) x \| \leq \|g(tA)y\|\) (\(0 < t < \infty\)), then \(\|x\| \leq C \|y\|\) for some constant \(C\). Many results are obtained. For example, every sectorial operator on \(X\) with an absolute functional calculus has an \(H^\infty\)-calculus; conversely, if \(A\) is sectorial on a Hilbert space and it has an \(H^\infty \)-calculus, then it has an absolute functional calculus. The absolute functional calculus can be characterized in terms of real interpolation spaces.
