The authors study existence, uniqueness, and numerical solution of one-dimensional nonlinear time-dependent equation, named Benjamin-Bona-Mahony equation. This equation models nonlinear dispersive systems and differs from a parabolic equation by the fact that \(u_{xx}\) is replaced by the term \(u_{xxt}\). The existence of the solution is established using Fourier expansion and compactness argument. The uniqueness is proved directly by an energy type of argument. Galerkin finite element method is applied using B-splines of degree three. Finally, a number of numerical experiments that support the developed theory are presented.
