Let \(S\) be a semigroup and \(a\in S\). If \(S\) has no zero, set \(P(a)=S\). If \(S\) has zero, denote by \(P(a)\) the set of all \(g\in S\) such that \(xg\neq 0\) for any \(x\in S^1a\setminus\{0\}\). In the present paper the authors propose the following new notion of conjugation in \(S\): they say that \(a,b\in S\) are conjugate if there is \(s\in P^1(a)\) such that \(as=sb\) and there is \(t\in P^1(b)\) such that \(bt=ta\). There are several known generalizations of the group-theoretic notion of conjugation to semigroups. The present one is shown to coincide with those for groups and free semigroups. The major part of the paper is devoted to study of this new relation in several transformation semigroups, including the full partial transformation monoid, the full transformation monoid and the monoid of all injective transformations.
