For any \(p\in[1,\infty]\), denote by \(p'\) the dual exponent of \(p\); namely, \(1/p+1/p'=1\). In this paper, the authors proved that, for any \(p\in(1,\infty)\), there exists a pair of weights \((u,v)\) such that the Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator \(M\) is bounded from the weighted Lebesgue space \(L^p(v)\) to \(L^p(u)\) and from \(L^{p'}(u^{1-p'})\) to \(L^{p'}(v^{1-p'})\), respectively, but the sparse operator is not bounded from \(L^p(v)\) to \(L^p(u)\). In particular, for any \(p\in(1,\infty)\), there exists a weight \(w\) such that \(M\) is bounded on \(L^p(w)\), but the sparse operator is not bounded on \(L^p(w)\).
