The superconvergence properties of immersed finite element methods (FEMs) for the one-dimensional elliptic interface problem are studied. Classical superconvergence phenomenon for FEM disappears unless the discontinuity of the coefficient is resolved by partition due to low global regularity of the solution. It is proved that immersed finite element method (IFEM) solutions inherit all desired superconvergence properties from standard finite element methods without the need of the mesh alignment to the interface. It is shown that for IFEM, superconvergence occurs at roots of generalized orthogonal polynomials that satisfy both orthogonality and interface jump conditions.
