In differential geometry, a hyper-Kähler manifold is a pseudo-Riemannian manifold \((M, g)\) of signature \((4p, 4q)\) together with a compatible hypercomplex structure, this is to say, a couple of anticommuting \(g\)-orthogonal parallel complex structures \((J_{1}, J_{2})\). Several authors studied the geometry of hyper-Kähler manifolds [\textit{A. Dancer} and \textit{A. Swann}, Math. Proc. Camb. Philos. Soc. 120, No. 1, 61--69 (1996; Zbl 0867.53056); \textit{M. Guediri}, Rend. Semin. Mat., Torino 52, No. 4, 371--376 (1994; Zbl 0838.53035); \textit{I. Kath} and \textit{M. Olbrich}, J. Geom. Phys. 57, No. 8, 1697--1711 (2007; Zbl 1183.53040); \textit{A. P. Petravchuk}, Ukr. Math. J. 40, No. 3, 331--334 (1988; Zbl 0794.17005); translation from Ukr. Mat. Zh. 40, No. 3, 385--388 (1988); \textit{S. M. Salamon}, Ann. Sci. Éc. Norm. Supér. (4) 19, No. 1, 31--55 (1986; Zbl 0616.53023)]. In this paper, the authors consider \((G,g)\) is an abelian hyper-Kähler Lie group. The principal objective is the classification of their Lie algebras up to dimension 12 and to study some of their geometric properties. In particular, they show that all such groups are locally symmetric and complete and that the metric is flat if and only if the group is 2-step nilpotent.
