The concept of near-isomorphism has played an important role in the study of torsion-free abelian groups of finite rank and it has been studied by many authors. The notion of a near-isomorphism of torsion-free abelian groups of infinite rank was introduced by the authors of the paper under this review [Commun. Algebra 35, No. 3, 1055--1072 (2007; Zbl 1133.20042)]. The authors introduce the new concept of bounded near-isomorphism which is a stronger form of near-isomorphism. Definition 5.1: Let \(G\) and \(H\) be torsion-free abelian groups. Then \(G\) and \(H\) are called bounded near-isomorphic \((G\cong_{b-nr} H)\) if for every natural number \(N\) there are monomorphisms \(\varphi_N : G \rightarrow H\) and \(\psi_N : H \rightarrow G\) such that the following hold: (i) \(H/G\varphi_N\) and \(G/H\psi_N\) are bounded; (ii) \((H/G\varphi_N)p = 0 = (G/H\psi_N)p\) for every prime \(p\) dividing \(N\). It is proved if two group are bounded near-isomorphic then they are near-isomorphic but there are no examples of two torsion-free groups that are near-isomorphic but not bounded near isomorphic. The authors prove \(G\cong_{b-nr} H\) if and only if for every prime \(p\) there is a monomorphism \(\varphi_p : G\rightarrow H\) such that the quotient \(H/G\varphi_p\) is bounded and has no \(p\)-torsion. The authors study bounded near-isomorphic bounded completely decomposable abelian groups (bcd-groups) as an application, too.
