This paper is the first part of the series of articles [\textit{A. Baldare}, J. Noncommut. Geom. 14, No. 3, 1129--1169 (2020; Zbl 07358369); J. Noncommut. Geom. 14, No. 3, 1171--1207 (2020; Zbl 1466.19008)]. The paper ([\textit{A. Baldare}, J. Noncommut. Geom. 14, No. 3, 1129--1169 (2020; Zbl 07358369)]) is well written, well documented and of huge interest in index theory. Let \(G\) be a compact Lie group. The paper deals with the definition and a detailed study of an index for families of \(G\)-invariant transversally elliptic operators, by using the powerful machinery of the Kasparov bivariant \(K\)-theory. Also, the author provides a Riemann-Roch property for its \(G\)-index (see Theorem 3.16 and Remark 3.17), by taking inspiration from \textit{M. F. Atiyah} and \textit{I. M. Singer}'s works [Ann. Math. (2) 87, 484--530 (1968; Zbl 0164.24001); Ann. Math. (2) 93, 119--138, 139--149 (1971; Zbl 0212.28603)].
