The Gibbons-Tsarev equation discussed in [\textit{J. Gibbons} and \textit{S. P. Tsarev}, Phys. Lett., A 211, No. 1, 19--24 (1996; Zbl 1072.35588)] admits the so-called Lax pair containing differentiation with respect to the spectral parameter (see [\textit{A. V. Odesskii} and \textit{V. V. Sokolov}, Commun. Math. Phys. 324, No. 1, 47--62 (2013; Zbl 1282.37036)]). This Lax pair arises from a system which contains the above spectral parameter as an unknown function and whose compatibility condition is given by the Gibbons-Tsarev equation. In this paper, to understand the geometric background of this Lax pair and to consider its extension to a more general situation, the author discusses a general geometric construction of the Lax pair in the framework of the theory of differential coverings established by the author and \textit{A. M. Vinogradov} [Acta Appl. Math. 15, No. 1--2, 161--209 (1989; Zbl 0692.35003)].
