First, the authors review the related differential equations, boundary conditions, and jump conditions. Then a detailed analysis of the phase plane associated with an integro-differential Euler-Lagrange equation is presented. The authors classify all possible configurations that arise as energy minimizing strain states, and derive bounds on the number of internal phase boundaries for any energy minimizing strain field. The asymptotic behavior of solutions to the minimization problem is studied through application of the Young measure. Finally, the authors present some numerical solutions to the minimization problem when the local stored energy is a specific quadratic nonconvex function. A variety of extremals, minimizing states and stress-strain response curves are calculated.
