A mapping \(\varphi : A \to B\) between algebras is called Jordan homomorphism if \(\varphi(a+b)=\varphi(a)+\varphi(b)\) and \(\varphi(a^2)=\varphi(a)^2\) for all \(a, b \in A\). If, in addition \(\varphi\) is multiplicative, then we say that it is a ring homomorphism. \noindent Applying a modification of a known theorem of \textit{W. Zelazko} [Stud. Math. 30, 83--85 (1968; Zbl 0162.18504)] the authors prove that if \(A\) is a Banach algebra and \(B\) is a semisimple commutative Banach algebra, then every Jordan homomorphism is a ring homomorphism. They also establish the Hyers--Ulam--Rassias stability of Jordan homomorphisms.
