It is known that sums of independent random variables converge almost surely if their partial sums converge completely. The authors investigate conditions weaker than complete convergence of partial sums which suffice for the almost sure convergence. Results of \textit{A. Hildebrand} [Ann. Probab. 20, No. 3, 1204-1212 (1992; Zbl 0762.60019)] are generalized in several directions.
