The state space approach based on a method of initial functions is extended to get exact dispersion relations for harmonic waves in an infinite isotropic plate. The governing equation for the natural frequencies of the plate is obtained in a closed form. Numerical results have been obtained by solving such an equation to provide dispersion curves for all the modes, extensional and transverse, for a plate under plane strain conditions. Since the method involves no formal approximations in the derivation or in the numerical solution, it is superior to other approximate methods such as continuum theory, shear deformation theory and theories involving higher order approximations for the displacements. The extension of the method to analyze dispersive properties of multilayered isotropic and anisotropic thick plates is also outlined.
