Consider an operator \(P_h\) in the class of \(h\)-admissible operators on \({\mathbb R}^n\) with real symbol. Let \(p\) be the principal symbol of \(P_h\), \(p^1\) the sub-principal symbol and \(\Phi_t\) the Hamiltonian flow of \(p\). For \(E_c\), a critical energy of \(p\), let \(I_\varepsilon=[E_c-\varepsilon,E_c+\varepsilon]\). The author studies the asymptotic behavior of the spectral function \(\gamma(E_c,h,\varphi)=\sum_{\lambda_j(h)\in I_\varepsilon} \varphi((\lambda_j(h)-E_c)/h)\) under the classical hypotheses: (H\(_1\)) \(\exists\varepsilon_0>0\) such that \(p^{-1}(I_{\varepsilon_0})\) is compact; (H\(_2\)) \(z_0=(x_0,\xi_0)\) is the unique critical point of \(p\) on the energy surface \(\Sigma_{E_c}\); \((H_3)\) \(z_0\) is a non-degenate critical point of \(p\) and its Hessian \(d^2p(z_0)\) is diagonal in some suitable set of local symplectic coordinates near \(z_0\); \((H_4)\) \(\varphi\) is in the Schwartz space \({\mathcal S}({\mathbb R})\) with Fourier transform \(\widehat\varphi\in C_0^\infty({\mathbb R})\). By \((H_1)\) the spectrum of \(P_h\) is discrete in \(I_\varepsilon\) for \(\varepsilon<\varepsilon_0\) and \(h\) small enough. The semi-classical trace formula establishes a link between the asymptotic behavior of \(\gamma(E_c,h,\varphi)\) as \(h\rightarrow 0\) and the closed trajectories of \(\Phi_t\) of energy \(E\). Here one is interested in the case of a critical energy in view of generalizing Khuat-Duy's result to more general operators where the closed trajectories of the linearized flow are not necessarily generated by a positive quadratic form, contrary to the case of a Schrödinger operator, and to give new contributions to the semi-classical trace formula.
