    The problem of determining the structure of the spaces of solutions to classical and quantum Yang-Baxter equations is investigated. Special attention is given to boundary solutions and some procedures for constructing them. Analogously to the original ones the modified Yang-Baxter equations \(R_{12}R_{13}R_{23}-R_{23}R_{13}R_{12}=\lambda [ ( 123) R_{12}-( 213) R_{23}] \) are considered (where \( ( 123) ,( 213) \) are corresponding permutations and \( \lambda \) is a nonzero element of the coefficient field which is connected to the braid and Hecke relations with \(q=( 1-\lambda)/\sqrt{ 1-\lambda ^{2}}\)). A modified unitary quantum \(R\)-matrix is presented in the form \(R=I+tr+O( t^{2}) \), where the `semiclassical limit' \(r\) is a skew modified classical \(r\)-matrix such that \([ r_{12},r_{13}] + [ r_{12},r_{23}] +[ r_{13},r_{23}] \) is a nonzero \( {\mathfrak s}{\mathfrak l}( n) \)-invariant. The solutions for \(r\in {\mathfrak s}{\mathfrak l}( n) \wedge {\mathfrak s}{\mathfrak l}( n) \) are connected with the Drinfeld-Jimbo modified classical \(r\)-matrix of the form \(\gamma =\sum_{i<j}e_{ij}\wedge e_{ji}\), and the appropriate quantization of \(\gamma \) is \(\exp ( 2t\gamma) \). The particular case \(r\in {\mathfrak s}{\mathfrak l}( 3) \wedge {\mathfrak s}{\mathfrak l}( 3) \) is considered in detail. Using Stolin's homological interpretation (due to Drinfeld) of the classical Yang-Baxter equation and a description of classical \(r\)-matrices in terms of `quasi-Frobenius' Lie algebras all the classical boundary \(r\)-matrices in \({\mathfrak s}{\mathfrak l} ( 3) \wedge {\mathfrak s}{\mathfrak l}( 3) \) and their unitary quantizations are explicitly listed.
