The authors provide several criteria for judging whether or not three species governed by a system of differential equations \(\dot x_ i=x_ if_ i(x_ 1,x_ 2,x_ 3)\) \((i=1,2,3)\) coexist in a biological environment. The results refer to permanent coexistence of the three species, that is whether the population vector points eventually to a compact subset of the positive orthant which does not depend on the initial conditions. This compact set may also be not restricted so that limit cycles or even chaotic behavior is allowed. Examples are presented for a one predator - two competing prey and two mutualistic species - one ''aprovechado'' models.
