The main theorem of the paper (Th. 2.1) says: Let \(h\) be a homeomorphism of the real plane (preserving or reversing the orientation) and \(D\) be a closed topological disc bounded by a simple closed curve \(C\) (= the boundary of \(D)\). Assume that there are two arcs \(\alpha= [a,b]\) and \(\beta= [b, a]\) contained in \(C\), such that \(D\cap h^{-1} (\beta)= \emptyset\) and \(h^{-1}(D) \cap \alpha= \emptyset\). Then, if \(\bigcap\{h^{-n}(D):n=1,2, \dots\} \neq \emptyset\), there exists a point \(x\in D\) such that \(h(x)\in D\) and \(h^2(x)=x\). If \(h\) preserves the orientation then we can choose \(x\) to be a fixed point of \(h\) \((h(x)=x)\). The second result of the paper gives an application of this theorem to the problem of canonical position around an isolated fixed point.
