    Let \(f(z)= \sum_{n\geq 1} a_ f(n) e^{2\pi inz}\in S_{2k}^{\text{new}} (N)\). Then it has been shown that \(f\) is a normalized (i.e., \(a_ f(1) =1\)) newform if and only if the Fourier coefficients \(a_ f(n)\) satisfy the following condition \[ a_ f(p) a_ f(n)= \begin{cases} a_ f(np) &\text{if } p\mid N\\ a_ f(np)+ p^{2k-1} a_ f(n/p) \quad &\text{if } p\nmid N\end{cases} \] for all primes \(p\leq \ell_{k,N}= \dim_ \mathbb{C} S_{2k}(N)\) and for all \(n\) with \(1\leq n\leq \ell_{k,N}\) under the assumption that the modular curve associated to \(\Gamma_ 0 (N)\) has genus zero. Further, in this paper similar results have been obtained, using the Shimura correspondence and the Saito-Kurokawa descent, to the following spaces: \(J_{k,1}\), \(S_ k^* (\Gamma_ 2)\), \(S^{\text{new}}_{k+1/2} (\Gamma_ 0 (4M))\), \(S_{k+1/2}^{+, \text{new}} (\Gamma_ 0 (4M))\), \(J_{k,1}^{\text{cusp,new}} (M)\) and \(S_ k^{*,\text{new}} (\Gamma_ 0^ 2 (M))\), where \(M\) is an odd squarefree natural number. These are generalizations of the results obtained in [\textit{M. Manickam}, \textit{B. Ramakrishnan} and \textit{T. C. Vasudevan}, Arch. Math. 51, 343-352 (1988; Zbl 0638.10021)].
