The Galois action of \(G_{\mathbb Q}\):= \(\text{Gal}(\overline{\mathbb Q}/\mathbb Q)\) on the first \(p\)-adic étale homology group for the tower of Fermat curves over \(\mathbb Q\) of degree \(p^m\), leads \textit{Y. Ihara} [Ann. Math. (2) 123, 43--106 (1986; Zbl 0595.12003)] to his \(p\)-adic beta function. By using a refinement which is due to \textit{G. W. Anderson} [Invent. Math. 95, No. 1, 63--131 (1989; Zbl 0682.14011)]), the author exposes in section 1 the Ihara-Anderson \(p\)-adic étale beta function for Fermat curves. On the other hand, guided by the so-called Boyarsky principle [\textit{M. Boyarsky}, Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 257, 359--369 (1980; Zbl 0475.14017)], the Dwork-Morita \(p\)-adic analogue is exposed in section 2. However, in order to apply such computations to Fermat curves \(F_m\) when they have good reduction at \(p\), a complete analysis of Frobenius matrices of Fermat curves which was carried out by \textit{R. F. Coleman} [\(p\)-adic analysis, Proc. Int. Conf., Trento/Italy 1989, Lect. Notes Math. 1454, 173--193 (1990; Zbl 0757.14013)] is needed; a sketch of principles of the computations by Coleman is given in section 4 and that provides, following the author terminology, the so called \(p\)-adic crystalline Dwork-Morita beta function. In section 5, the Fontaine theory [\textit{J.-M. Fontaine}, Invent. Math. 65, 379--409 (1982; Zbl 0502.14015)], in the case of a smooth and proper variety \(X\) defined over \(\mathbb Q_p\), having potentially good reduction at \(p\), is briefly described. On the basis of the author definition of the \(p\)-adic beta function introduced by Fontaine, a unified approach to Ihara-Anderson \(p\)-adic étale beta function and Dwork-Morita \(p\)-adic crystalline counterpart, is exposed in section 6.
