A real \(W^*\)-algebra R is a real weak-operator closed *-algebra acting on a complex Hilbert space such that \(R\cap iR=\{0\}\). It is said to be of type \(II_{\infty}\), \(III_{\lambda}\) \((0\leq \lambda <1)\) if the von Neumann algebra U(R) generated by R is of type \(II_{\infty}\), \(III_{\lambda}\) respectively. The author studies the type \(III_{\lambda}\) real \(W^*\)-factors and announces some results analogous to the celebrated results of A. Connes in the structure theory of type III von Neumann algebras. In particular, he defines the real crossed product \(W^*_ r(\theta,Q)\) of a real \(W^*\)-algebra Q by a single automorphism \(\theta\) and he states that every type \(III_{\lambda}\) real \(W^*\)-factor is isomorphic to a real crossed product \(W^*_ r(\theta,Q)\) of a type \(II_{\infty}\) real \(W^*\)- algebra Q by an automorphism \(\theta\). The author also gives necessary and sufficient conditions for two such real crossed products to be isomorphic.
