Let \(E\) be a subset of \(\mathbb R^n\). Then \(E\) is called a Salem set whenever the condition \(\dim_H(E)=\dim_F(E)\) holds, where \(\dim_F(E)\) is the Fourier dimension and \(\dim_H(E)\) is the Hausdorff dimension of the set \(E\). The notions of these dimensions are briefly described and are compared, additional references are given. A survey of this paper is also devoted to Salem sets and Kahane's problem. In addition, the special attention is given to the motivation of this research and to some basic notions and auxiliary results including certain results in algebraic number theory. This research deals with constructing ``the first explicit (i.e., non-random) examples of Salem sets in \(\mathbb R^n\) of arbitrary prescribed Hausdorff dimension'' by using forms of Diophantine approximations in number fields. The authors note that this completely resolves a problem proposed by Kahane more than 50 years ago.
