The Cauchy problem for the linear evolution system that models a thermoelastic Kirchhoff thin plate with memory in the heat conduction \[ u_{tt}(t)+\Delta(\Delta u(t)+v(t))=0, \quad u, v :\Omega \times[0,\infty) \to {\mathbb R}, \;\Omega\subset{\mathbb R}^2, \] \[ v_t(t)+\int_0^\infty k(s)[c v(t-s)-\Delta v(t-s)]\,ds -\Delta u_t(t)=0 \] with boundary conditions \(u(t)=\Delta u(t)=v(t)=0\) on \(\partial\Omega\) and with initial data for \(u(0), u_t(t)\), \(v(0), v(-s)\) is considered. The problem is set as an abstract first order Cauchy problem in a weighted space is given and it is proven that the solution operator generates a contraction semigroup of class \(C_0\). It is shown that in spite of the decay to zero of single trajectories of the problem the semigroup studied is not exponentially stable.
