A module M is called extending [respectively \(1-C_ 1]\) if each [respectively each uniform] submodule that has no proper essential extension in M is a direct summand of M. The main results are, for R a commutative domain, (corollary 2) M is extending if and only if its torsion submodule t(M) is injective and \(M/t(M)\) is extending; (theorem 11) for M torsionfree reduced, M is extending if and only if it is a finite direct sum of uniform submodules of which the sum of each pair is extending. Extending modules over a Dedekind domain are described with the aid of the author's adjacent article [Osaka J. Math. 25, No.3, 539-551 (1988; Zbl 0715.16005)].
