Let \(S\) be a compact, connected, boundaryless smooth Riemann surface endowed with a metric \(d\) and the Lebesgue measure \(\lambda\). Let \(\Hom(S)\) be the space of homeomorphisms on \(S\) which are \(\lambda\)-invariant. The metric \(d\) on \(S\) induces a metric on \(\Hom_\lambda(S)\). Let \(f: S\to S\) be a continuous map and for each \(x\in S\), \(\delta> 0\) and \(n\in\mathbb{N}\), let \(B_x(\delta,n)\) denote the set \(\{y\in S: d(f^j(x), f^j(y))<\delta\) for \(j= 0,1,\dots, n\}\) which is called the dynamical ball for \(f\). Using a special atlas on \(S\) and this notion the authors define a new Lyapunov exponent without assuming differentiability of \(f\) and show that if \(f\) has derivative, then the new and the usual Lyapunov exponent coincide. As the main result they prove that there exists a dense subset of \(\Hom_\lambda(S)\) in which every homeomorphism has zero new Lyapunov exponent at \(\lambda\)-almost every point.
