The following problem is considered in this paper: Let \(M_ 1,M_ 2\) be remotal in X. Do there exist \(m_ 1\in M_ 1\), \(m_ 2\in M_ 2\) such that \(\| m_ 1-m_ 2\| =\sup_{x_ 1\in M_ 1,x_ 2\in M_ 2}\| x_ 1-x_ 2\| ?)\) If this happens the sets \(M_ 1\), \(M_ 2\) are said to be distant sets.) This problem was raised by \textit{T. Narang} [Nieuw Arch. Wisk. III. Ser. 25, 54-79 (1977; Zbl 0342.46009)] who together with \textit{G. C. Ahuja} and \textit{S. Trehan}, answered it in the affirmative in the case when \(M_ 1\) is remotal and \(M_ 2\) is compact. [J. Indian Math. Soc., New Ser. 39, 293--297 (1975; Zbl 0414.54008)]. The present author examines the problem for any two remotal sets \(M_ 1\), \(M_ 2\) in the normed linear space C(K) of real-valued continuous functions on a compact metric space (K,d). He proves the following theorem: Theorem. Let K be a compact metric space, \(M_ 1\) and \(M_ 2\) remotal subsets of C(K). Then \(M_ 1\) and \(M_ 2\) are distant sets.
