In this paper the authors study direct sums \(M=\oplus_{i\in I}M_ i\) of indecomposable modules. In detail, necessary and sufficient conditions are given in order that M be quasi-continuous or continuous. [For these and related concepts we refer to an earlier paper of the authors; J. Pure Appl. Algebra 38, 197-210 (1983; Zbl 0506.16016.] It is shown that any quasi-continuous \(M=\oplus_{i\in I}M_ i\) with indecomposable \(M_ i\) is locally semi-T-nilpotent. This enables the authors to free some results of \textit{K. Oshiro} [Osaka J. Math. 20, 681-694 (1983; Zbl 0514.16016)] from their restriction to uniform dimension and to give simpler proofs. The results of \textit{K. Oshiro}, mentioned above, are announced in [Proc. 14th Symp. Ring theory, Matsumoto/Jap. 1981, 46-52 (1981; Zbl 0474.16015)]. Using a central result of Harada, published in 1974 and the main theorem of the paper, published in 1983 and cited above, the authors show: Let \(M=\oplus_{i\in I}M_ i\) with indecomposable \(M_ i\). The following statements are equivalent: (1) M is continuous; (2) M is quasi-continuous, and the \(M_ i\) are continuous.
