The author proves that if T is a contraction on a Hilbert space, then the resolvent of T is of bounded characteristic on the open unit disc D in the complex plane, if and only if T is annihilated by a nonzero holomorphic function on D with infinitely differentiable boundary values. In case T is completely non-unitary, the resolvent of T is of bounded characteristic if and only if T is of class \(C_ 0\) and \(\sigma\) (T) is a thin set. A thin set which is contained in the boundary of D, is called a Carleson set and that in D satisfies the Blaschke condition. Moreover he considers the above result about a bounded linear operator on a Banach space such that the sequence of norms \(\{\| T^ n\|\), \(n=1,2,...\}\) is of power growth.
