The paper is mainly concerned with when a residual intersection is Cohen-Macaulay. The concept of residual intersection was introduced by \textit{M. Artin} and \textit{M. Nagata} [J. Math. Kyoto Univ. 12, 307--323 (1972; Zbl 0263.14019)], and has been investigated since then by several authors. Let \(R\) be a local Cohen-Macaulay ring and let \(I\) be an ideal of \(R\) and \(A=(a_{1},\dots,a_{s})\subset I\), but with \(A\neq I\). The ideal \(J=A:I\) is said to be an \(s\)-residual intersection of \(A\), or simply a residual intersection, if \(\mathrm{ht}(J)\geq s\geq \mathrm{ht}(I)\). This notion generalizes the notion of linkage. The main result in this paper is: If \(R\) is Cohen-Macaulay with canonical module \(\omega\), \(I\) satisfies some special local condition (the author calls it \(G_s\)), and \(\mathrm{depth} \omega/I^j\omega\geq\mathrm{ dim}R/I -j +1\) for \(1\leq j\leq s-\mathrm{ht} I + 1\), then every \(s\)-residual intersection \(J\) of \(I\) is Cohen-Macaulay. This gives a generalization of some results of \textit{C. Huneke} and \textit{B. Ulrich} [J. Reine Angew. Math. 390, 1--20 (1988; Zbl 0732.13004)]. The author gives some results on the canonical module of \(R/J\), where \(J\) is a residual intersection of \(I\). Some more applications are given.
