Given a variety \({\mathfrak V}\) of associative algebras over a field of characteristic zero, it is natural to consider its multilinear identities as modules over symmetric groups on appropriately many symbols and its relatively free algebras of finite ranks as GL-modules (i.e modules over general linear groups of suitable dimensions). This latter structure is important in computing the Poincaré-Hilbert series of relatively free algebras. The author establishes a close connection between the two module structures. As an application he computes the Poincaré-Hilbert series for the variety determined by the identities of the matrix algebra of order two. Similar results hold in the Lie algebra case. There are also some results on codimensions of identities and on Poincaré-Hilbert series in the non-matrix case. The results obtained give a good basis for further developments in the described area; they also generalize some theorems of A. Berele, E. Formanek, P. Halpin, W.-C. W. Li and the reviewer.
