The paper estimates the size of \(\Lambda_{n1}=\sup \| p_{n}'\| /\| p_ n\|\) where \(p_ n(z)\) is a polynomial of degree at most n and \(| z| =1\). The supremum is taken over all such polynomials having a zero on the unit circle. By Bernstein's theorem we know that \(\Lambda_{n1}\leq n\). The authors show that \(\Lambda_{n1}=n-(\pi^ 2/16)\cdot (1/n)+O(1/n^ 2)\) and that this is sharp. For odd n they even show a little more, namely, that for any \(p_ n\) which vanishes at \(z=1\) and \(\| p_ n\| \leq 1\) we have \(| p_{n}'(-1)| \leq n \cos^ 2\pi /4n\) with equality for a single (up to multiplicative constant of modulus 1) polynomial \(P_ n\) which is explicitly defined by means of Chebyshev polynomials.
