In order to construct closed surfaces with continuous unit normal, the author investigates certain spaces of spline functions on meshes of four- sided faces. Let M be a polyhedral mesh of four-sided faces and let S(M) be the space of all functions on M whose restrictions to each face are certain biquadratic or bicubic polynomials satisfying matching conditions across the edges. The author investigates two cases: in the first one he assumes that the singular verticles are ``close together'', in the second one the singular vertices are ``quite far apart''. In both cases he constructs a basis for S(M) of positive functions which sum to 1 and he shows that S(M) is suitable for interpolating data at midpoints of faces of M. The construction of \(G^ 1\) surfaces i.e. continuous surfaces with continuous unit normal using bicubic polynomials on a quadrilateral mesh is discussed by \textit{J. J. van Wijk} [Comput. Aided Geom. Des. 3, 1-13 (1986; Zbl 0616.65010)].
