In 1967 Auslander introduced the Gorenstein dimension of a finitely generated module over a commutative noetherian ring. This provides a characterization of Gorenstein local rings analogous to the well--known Auslander-Buchsbaum-Serre characterization of regular local rings. \textit{A. A. Gerko} [Sb. Math. 192, No. 8, 1165--1179 (2001; Zbl 1029.13010)] introduced a notion of ``Cohen-Macaulay dimension'' which, for the local Cohen-Macaulay rings, plays the same role as the usual ``projective dimension'' does for the local regular rings and the ``Gorenstein dimension'' does for the Gorenstein ring. Recent years have seen much work on the Gorenstein theory which is now contains the Gorenstein injective, Gorenstein projective, and Gorenstein flat dimension. The purpose of this paper is to develop a similar theory in the Cohen-Macaulay case. The authors define three new homological dimensions: Cohen-Macaulay injective, Cohen-Macaulay projective, and Cohen-Macaulay flat, and show that they inhabit a theory similar to that of classical injective, projective, and flat dimension.
