There are two ways to study spaces of ultradifferentiable functions, depending on whether the growth control of the derivatives of a function is done using a weight sequence or a weight function. A comparison of the two methods can be found in [\textit{J.~Bonet} et al., Bull. Belg. Math. Soc. - Simon Stevin 14, No.~3, 425--444 (2007; Zbl 1165.26015)]. The present paper considers ultradifferentiable function spaces defined in terms of a weight matrix or a matrix of weight functions, which includes intersections and unions of ultradifferentiable classes in the usual sense. The main goal is to characterize (Theorems~5.4 and~5.6) when a class of functions described in terms of a matrix of weights (respectively matrix of weight functions) can also be described in terms of a matrix of weight functions (respectively matrix of weights). To this end, new mixed growth indices are introduced that allow quantifying growth properties of the matrices involved.
