The author introduces a complex function \(\beta(s)\) which interpolates the values of the Bernoulli numbers \(B_{2n}\) at positive even integers \(s=2n\). This enables him, among other things, to find a formula expressing Riemann's zeta-function \(\zeta(s)\) in terms of \(\beta(s)\) at odd integers \(s \geq 3\). A large part of the article is devoted to historical comments and a philosophical discussion of infinity and infinitesimal numbers. A final remark relates the Riemann hypothesis to a simple hypothesis concerning the pairings of zeros of \(\zeta(s)\).
