The author develops a theory of chain functors such that a chain functor defines a spectrum and vice versa. He defines a tensor product of chain functors to give the tensor product of spectra. This is associative and commutative, and satisfies the Künneth theorem unlike the smash product of spectra. The author also defines the localization of chain functors in the same manner as that of spectra, and shows a natural exact sequence of chain functors \(_{\mathcal L}C_*\to C_*\to C_{{\mathcal L}*}\) for a category \({\mathcal L}\). In particular, if \({\mathcal L}\) consists of a single object, then the exact sequence gives rise to Bousfield's cofiber sequence of spectra. Furthermore, the exact sequence is expressed by tensoring with the localization of a fixed chain functor \(\mathbb{Z}_*: C_*\otimes_{\mathcal L}\mathbb{Z}_*\to C_*\otimes \mathbb{Z}_*\to C_*\otimes \mathbb{Z}_{{\mathcal L}*}\). In other words, \(C_{{\mathcal L}*}= C_*\otimes \mathbb{Z}_{{\mathcal L}*}\). These formulae are shown algebraically.
