The one-dimensional Gierer-Meinhardt system with a precursor is studied on the symmetric interval \((-1,1)\) subject to the Neumann boundary conditions. This system has no homogeneous uniform steady states but admits existence of \(N\)-peaked steady state solutions. The authors construct these solutions with the Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction method, which relies on the large distance between individual spikes. Sufficient conditions for stability and instability of these \(N\)-spike steady states are also found from analysis of nonlocal eigenvalue problem. Numerical approximations of steady-state solutions are presented for constant, linear, and periodic precursors.
