Let \(A\) denote the class of functions \(f(z)\) of the form \(f(z)=z +\sum^\infty_{k=2} a_kz^k\), analytic in the unit disk \(U=\{z:|z|<1\}\). Let \(s^*(\alpha)\), \(k(\alpha)\) denote the class of functions in \(A\) which are starlike of order \(\alpha\), convex of order \(\alpha\) respectively, \(0\leq\alpha <1\). A well-known result due to Szegö says that the partial sums \(f_n(z)= z+ \sum^n_2 a_kz^k\) are starlike for \(|z|< {1\over 4}\) if \(f\in S^*\). In this paper the author considers the partial sums \(F_n(z)= z+a_nz^n\) of \(f\in A\). It is proved \(F_n\in S^*(\alpha)\) for \[ |z|< \Bigl\{(1-\alpha)/ \bigl( (n-\alpha)|a_n|\bigr)\Bigr\}^{1 \over n-1}\leq 1 \] and \[ F_n\in K (\alpha) \text{ for }|z|<\biggl((1- \alpha)/ \bigl(n(n- \alpha)|a_n |\bigr) \biggr)^{1\over n-1}\leq 1. \] The partial sums of the extremal functions \(f(z)= z\mid (1-z)\) and \(f(z)= z\mid(1-z)^2\) are also studied. There are a few printing errors. For example the left side of (3.3) should be \(\text{Re} ({2+z\over 1+z+ z^2})\) as also in the right side of \((3.2)\).
