Theory of operator algebras I. (Q5952643)

This is an unaltered 2nd printing of the first edition of 1979 (Zbl 0436.46043) to constitute the fifth of the Encyclopedia of Mathematical Sciences subseries on operator algebras and non-commutative geometry. The first four books have not yet been published. The sub-editors have included a preface about developments broached in 1980 at Kingston, Ontario [see \textit{R. V. Kadison} (ed.), ``Operator algebras and applications'', Proc. Symp. Pure Math. 38 (1982; Zbl 0488.00012)] and on further post-Kingston developments which should be dealt with in other volumes.
