Let \(G\) be a complex, connected, reductive algebraic group with Weyl group \(W\) and Lie algebra \(\mathfrak g\). The Steinberg variety consists of triples \((x,B',B'')\) with \(B'\), \(B''\) Borel subgroups and \(x\) a nilpotent element in the intersection of \(\text{Lie}(B')\) with \(\text{Lie}(B')\). Let the Cartan subalgebra \(\mathfrak h\) of \(\mathfrak g\) be invariant under \(W\). The coinvariant algebra of \(W\) is the quotient of \(\mathbb Q[\mathfrak h^*]\) by the ideal generated by the homogeneous \(W\) invariants of positive degree. The main result is that the graded Borel-Moore homology of the Steinberg variety is isomorphic to the smash product of the coinvariant algebra of \(W\) and the group algebra of \(W\). Another proof, relying on deeper results than those employed here, has been given by \textit{N. Kwon} [Mich. Math. J. 58, No. 3, 771--781 (2009; Zbl 1196.14039)].
