The authors study the Benjamin-Bona-Mahony (BBM) equation which is alternative to the Korteweg de Vries(KdV) equation to describe propagation of long unidirectional dispersive waves. The main result is a finite difference scheme which is proved to have similar properties as the partial diffential equation itself, namely, it conserves a discrete Sobolev norm and it has a unique solution. Moreover, the scheme is second order accurate in both the time and space variables. The proofs of the results makes use of summation by parts identities for discrete difference operators and the existence theorem also relies on the Brouwer fixed point theorem.
