Introducing the definition of the effective heat-absorbing and heat-emitting temperatures, the authors formulate the second law of thermodynamics and derive a general formula for the real working power. Various types of counterflow heat exchangers are analyzed with giving several illustration examples. The method can be used also for chemical reactions. The authors study, as an example, the combustion of carbon and they shown the meaning of the effective heat-emitting temperature and of the power loss in combustion. The example sows that, thermodynamically, it is possible to develop a more elegant thermal combustion process with increasing the pressure during the combustion and with the same efficiency as with the electrochemical combustion process.
